Triple Purpose Sheep

Breed Description

On our homestead, we focus on the Icelandic breed of sheep, but also experiment with crosses between the Icelandic, Shetland and Clun Forest breeds. Our goal with our flock is to raise truly triple purpose sheep that have the udder, supply and temperament for milking, high quality wool in diverse natural colors, and deliciously mild lamb meat grown from pasture alone. We are also selecting for good mothering traits, weather hardiness, parasite resistance, and gentle temperament. Right now, Icelandics are the heart of our breeding program, but we plan to continue experimenting with outcrossing to see if it helps get us closer to our goals.

Our Management System

We currently raise unregistered Icelandic and cross sheep who are completely grass-fed besides an occasional treat for training purposes. In the growing season, our sheep are out on pasture with minimal shelter, lots of grass, water, and minerals. In the winter, the sheep are penned closer to the house with access to quality hay, minerals and fresh water daily. We treat very minimally for parasites and hope to work towards a more resistant flock.
